Sports injury happens quite frequent that you would have thought so. I personally have encountered a few incidents, although it is not so serious but it is something that can be avoided in the first place. Sports injury usually happens when there is not enough warming up being done. For athletes, warming up is not something that should be seen with one eye because there are cases that insufficient warming up led to injuries that causes troubles for athletes.
Stretching and warming up in fact has often times being under-utilized in sporting, and especially in maintaining as well as improving an athlete’s performance. It should also be an essential tool in preventing sports injuries among athletes and other people in general.
Besides what has been mentioned above, warming up activities has other several benefits too. It should be seen a preparation of the body to be able to perform the consequent activity which of course, will be even strenuous. To summarize, warming up can help:-
Ø Your body and mind to prepare for a much harder and tougher activities
Ø Increase your body’s core temperature
Ø Increase your body’s muscle temperature which will be a big aid in preventing sudden cramps
Ø Loosen up your body and makes you become more flexible and in the mood
You should also consider not only warming up, but effective warming up, especially as an athlete. Effective warming includes a series of proper methods of warming up. You should start with gentle movements and move on to faster and energetic movements. A complete warming up should comprise of general warm up like light walking and other kinds of light activities; static stretching such as arms, thighs and neck stretching; sports specific warm up; and dynamic stretching.
So there you have the four key element of a proper warm up. However, for everyday practices and training for non-athletes, maintaining a typical warm up (the first three steps mentioned in the previous paragraph) before you start exercising is quite more than enough. What is important is that it is done and it is done correctly.
