Obesity is easily understood as having too much fat that can endanger a person’s health, by increasing their risks towards terminal diseases such as stroke, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes and even arthritis because of the excess load of weight pressuring the bones and muscles of the body. It is definitely a health condition that puts a person in a higher mortality risk.
Being overweight is defined by having a weight 20% above the desirable weight. The desirable weight or ideal weight is defined as having a BMI (Body Mass Index) index of between 20 to 25. BMI is equal to weight in kilogrammes divided by the square of the height in metres. A person with a BMI of 40 and above is considered as having clinically severe obesity which is often known as morbid obesity. It can be easily recognized if you’re having a 100 or mound pounds above your supposedly ideal weight. This is by all means a chronic disease that is being faced by millions of people worldwide, and it’s probably not only genetics, but current hectic lifestyle, pressure, stress and fast food should take the blame as well.
Causes of a person to be considered overweight or obese are subjected to several leading factors such as overeating, low metabolic rates and hereditary.
i. If you think a person who eat as they please or according to their mood are people who have low will power, you should stop and consider this. First of all, it’s something that’s possible for everybody. It has been proven that a person’s desire for food is actually because of a hormone called serotonin, which act on the appetite centre in our brain. If it seems like you’re having difficulties in controlling your appetite, it’s more likely than not, that you’re having less of this particular hormone, just like diabetics lack insulin.
ii. Metabolic rate is moderately related to a person’s genetic build. A person can be born with high metabolism and sometimes it’s their lifestyle and the lifestyle of their forefathers that resulted to the high metabolic rate that they’re so lucky to have. Metabolic rate refers to the minimum energy required for a person to maintain life which varies from a person to another. People with higher metabolic rate use a lot more energy to do a daily activity as compared to a person with lower metabolic rate. This is the main reason as to you wondering sometimes why some people just keep on eating and not get fat whereby you can indulge a single tall sized frappucino and gain half a kilo the next day. However, there are actually few ways you can increase your metabolism.
Basically proven through many life experiences which sometimes even being on real life shows on TV, you can actually overcome the problem of obesity - the natural way or vice versa. You can change your lifestyle (both daily life routines and eating style) and another option is by prescribing medication. Some people even act on both efforts. In some serious situation that involves life and death or a dire need or longing for a better figure quickly but painfully would opt to take it to the surgery bed.
However, it is advisable that you take all necessary precautions and learn the details before jumping to any decision. Ask for professional help from your doctors and evaluate. If your obesity problem is not that serious and rectifiable, you can start slow but the most important thing is maintain consistency.
